Throughout the day we’ll cover: 

  • Introduction to the different graphics packages 
  • Introduction to the fantastic ggplot2 package 
  • Groups, geoms, stats and layers within ggplot2 
  • Scales, axes and legends Facets, colour themes and general themes

By the end of the day participants will be able to: 

  • Have a thorough understanding of how different graphics packages in R work, in particular ggplot2 
  • Efficiently plot your own data in eye-catching ways within seconds, including barplots, histograms, raster plots, scatter plots, density plots & more! 
  • Customise their graphs with colour schemes, themes, fonts and grid layouts 
  • Understand how these techniques will improve efficiency and results


Intro to R - 1 day course

This is a one-day intensive course on R and assumes no prior knowledge. Learn how to efficiently code in R. Grasp fundamental techniques like functions for loops, conditional expressions and learn when to use them.

Data Carpentry - 1 day course

Bring yourself to the forefront of data science with the tidyverse. Work with data on a day-to-day basis? Take the pain out of data manipulation by leveraging the tidyverse. This course covers key aspects of the tidyverse, including dplyr, lubridate, tidyr and tibbles.

Statistical Modelling in R

Make standard statistical techniques easy with R, out of the box. Learn R’s fundamental modelling techniques, from hypotheses tests, ANVOA tables, regression analysis, to more sophisticated methods such as clustering and principal components analysis (PCA).

Alan Cordwell


Alan’s career has spanned 35 years working in mobile radio and IT for the Philips Group and latterly in the police service. He has worked as technical advisor to several major projects for systems replacement, working both with users to agree specifications and with bespoke software suppliers to ensure the products were delivered to those specifications.

He is currently working as a freelance software developer and IT consultant, with specialist knowledge of Java and web technologies including HTML, Javascript, CSS, PHP and MySQL. He has also done considerable work on developing applications for the Android operating system, and with embedded microcontrollers in both the C and assembler languages.
