What could a career as a data scientist look like?

What is a Data Scientist?

Data Scientist is a fascinating, yet complex job that involves analysing and interpreting particular digital data.

Essentially, data science is about using data to create as much impact as possible for a particular company. As a data scientist, you will be finding certain patterns in the statistics of a certain website, and you will be using that data to develop insights in how to support and assist companies and solve problems.

Being a Data Scientist is by far one of the most promising career options right now, particularly as the technology industry continues to expand rapidly, meaning that data scientists are constantly required to assist companies.

To become a Data Scientist, you will need to thoroughly understand the fundamentals of linear algebra, calculus, and statistics, as well as having a technical degree (mathematics, computer science, or engineering). You will also need to develop your programming skills by knowing how to code and being skilled in using Python, SQL, R, and Javascript.

How many hours does a Data Scientist work in a week?

With a career in data science, your working hours may vary, but your standard full-time hours will tend to be 37 hours per week, Monday to Friday. Depending on which company you work for, you may have to work longer hours in the week, or on weekends, as certain projects require much more of your time.

What does a Data Scientist do day to day?

On a day to day basis, you will spend a lot of time in meetings and project discussions in order to talk about your next goals, and you will also spend time coding, testing, debugging, and visualising.

Depending on what project you are working on, you will be using your technical skills to analyse large quantities of complex information, and then predicting user behaviour through your data analysis. You will also be creating statistical models from your findings, and identifying trends and patterns in your company’s data.

Can you work from home?

Currently, it is possible for a data scientist to now work from home, due to the effects of the pandemic. Many companies have adapted their employees to work remotely, and this is no different in data science.

What type of companies could you work for?

Almost every technology-based company includes data science, as this is necessary for companies to understand and interpret complex data for marketing and financial reasons.

There is a huge range of top companies that you could work for, including Facebook, Netflix, Linkedin, or Microsoft.

Is being a Data Scientist stressful?

A career in data science can be challenging at times, as you will need a variety of skills to be successful, including learning Python and SQL, and also having excellent business and communication skills. As you know, data science is a very analytical and intellectual field, so there are many technical requirements needed to be successful at the job.

However, it can also be a very rewarding career if you keep on top of your deadline, as you will be learning plenty of new things about the future of the technology industry. Find out how to get started with our Data Scientist Bootcamp
